Plain language resource development, editing and review services
Every organisation approaches communication differently — and we get that. Whether you're starting from scratch, reworking existing materials, or simply need a second set of eyes, we're here to support your team in a way that works for you.
We offer flexible plain language services to suit your needs, including:
Resource development – we can help you create new materials that are clear, accessible, and fit for purpose
Editing and rewriting – we can rework existing content to align with plain language principles and meet your audience’s needs
Reviews and feedback – if you’ve already drafted something, we can review it and provide practical, constructive suggestions. Allowing you to make you own changes.
Our approach is collaborative, respectful, and tailored to your organisation, sector, and audience. Whether you're working in health, community services, government or beyond — we’ll work with you to ensure your communication is clear, consistent, and effective.
Our services:
Plain language resource development
Need a new resource but not sure where to start? We can help.
If you have the information, research, or key messages — we can turn it into a clear, user-friendly document that meets the needs of your audience. Whether it’s a fact sheet, guide, web content, or something else entirely, we’ll work with you to create content that’s accurate, accessible, and easy to understand. All resources developed will align with the four principles of plain language: relevant, findable, understandable, usable (ISO 24495-1:2023).
Plain language conversion
Our plain language document conversion service streamlines complex documents into plain language versions, enhancing customer understanding and minimising the risk of misinterpretation.
This option is a complete conversion of all text into plain language. Changes will be made to align with the four principles of plain language: relevant, findable, understandable, usable (ISO 24495-1:2023).
This will be accompanied by a list of suggested design and formatting changes.
Plain language review
We understand that different organisations deal with a vast array of complex and ever-changing documents. Our plain language document review service is a great option for people wanting to better understand the plain language process and in turn, be able to apply feedback to future versions of the resource. This option will include comments on text with suggested changes and justification for these changes. This will be accompanied by a list of suggested design and formatting changes.

Codesign services
Our network of multicultural community engagement champions will run focus groups with their communities to inform your document design and content. This process helps you to research your audience and contributes to the relevance of the document, by understanding the needs and challenges of these communities.
Focus groups include 6 – 10 participants (led by champions with some in-language interpreting and supported by enliven). Participants and champions are paid for their time. Focus groups generally run from 1 – 2 hours and we produce a final report. Focus group questions are designed with you, enliven and champions to promote cultural respect and understanding.
Plain language review of content.
Our plain language team will review the codesign material (if input from community was sought prior to developing your draft document). While it is best practice to include co-design early in the process, we know that this may not be possible in all cases. It is also possible to seek multicultural input later in the process through our multicultural lens testing.
We will create a draft document that ensures your information is findable and understandable. We will send you the draft and allow for 2 rounds of edits as needed.
Multicultural lens testing.
This service is also available through our multicultural network. Members of our network individually review the draft plain language document for the following:
Is it culturally respectful, sensitive and inclusive?
Is it culturally relevant?
Would it translate well or are there terms or concepts that are not known to some committees?
Is it relatable?
Is it easy to understand for people from their culture?
This service also focuses on whether your document is relevant and culturally inclusive. It also tests some elements of understandability but noting that understandability can only effectively be measured by testing the document with laypeople from multicultural communities (see below).
Multicultural layperson testing.
This service is facilitated by our network members with laypeople from their communities. It tests whether laypeople from multicultural communities who are not familiar with your service or topic can find the information they need, understand the information and use it to take whatever action is needed.
This service is not available as a standalone service. We use this process and the multicultural review process to test our own plain language documents at enliven.
Please note:
Multicultural codesign, multicultural lens testing and plain language review services are available as standalone services.
Multicultural layperson testing (consumer plain language testing) is only available after both plain language review and multicultural testing.
