Project summary

Connect IT was part of the Australian Government’s Be Connected initiative, which helped older Australians (aged 50 and over) build confidence and skills in using digital technology. As a registered Lead Mentor, we trained community members to become Digital Mentors, people who supported and encouraged older adults in their own communities to get online safely and confidently.

The program included two training days, follow-up support, and access to online resources. We delivered Connect IT in the City of Greater Dandenong, Cardinia Shire, and the City of Casey.

Key outputs and outcomes

  • 92 digital mentors trained. Representing the following ethno-specific groups: Afghan, African, Fijian, French, Indian, Pakistan, Spanish, Sri Lanka.

  • 19 digital mentor training sessions.

  • Over 200hrs of training support provided.

  • 85% of digital mentors reported community members have increased confidence in using digital technology.

  • 1,250 community members helped through information sessions, support groups and resource dissemination.

“We run weekly sessions for older African women. We are now incorporating digital technology skills within all our sessions. It has been a great way to show them how they can make a medical appointment or find correct health information online."

- RM, Cardinia Shire
